What upholstery cutting does.
Cutting sizes the upholstery components before they are sewn: cover panels cut from patterned fabric or leather, foam and fill cut to a cushion profile, and welt and trim slit to width. Upholstery cutting is exacting because a cover panel cut off pattern or a foam core cut off profile shows in the finished piece and cannot be corrected downstream.
The category spans panel and pattern cutting for cover fabric and leather, foam cutting by blade or contour profiler for cushions and padding, and slitting for welt cord and trim. Leather adds its own problem: natural hides vary and carry defects, so leather cutting is as much about nesting around flaws as about the cut itself.
Cutting sits at the front of the upholstery line, so its accuracy sets the ceiling for every sewn assembly after it and its yield decides how much expensive hide and fabric becomes product versus scrap.
